Hogwarts Legacy 2 news and rumours: Everything we know so far

From a potential Hogwarts Legacy 2 release date, multiplayer rumours, gameplay leaks and development updates, to possible links with the Harry Potter HBO series, we’ve gathered all the latest news and speculation surrounding Warner Bros. Games’ highly anticipated sequel.

Hogwarts Legacy was the best-selling game of 2023. Despite its huge popularity, however, the game missed out on a number of major GOTY gongs and was notably snubbed at prestigious ceremonies such as The Game Awards.

But while Hogwarts Legacy may not have received the recognition some fans expected at major video game awards, its popularity with players has never really gone away. That’s why, despite Hogwarts Legacy 2 not yet being officially announced, anticipation for a sequel is already building.

With that in mind, here’s everything we know so far about Hogwarts Legacy 2, including the latest information release date rumours, gameplay details, multiplayer speculation, development updates and when we could potentially see the game’s first trailer.

This article was last updated in September 2026 and will be refreshed when we know more.

Hogwarts Legacy, Warner Bros. Games

Is Hogwarts Legacy 2 officially confirmed?

Yes, Hogwarts Legacy 2 is happening. While neither Warner Bros. Games nor Avalanche Software has made an official announcement or reveal, following months of speculation and during an earnings report in August 2026, Warner Bros. Games said:

“We expect Games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second instalment of Hogwarts Legacy.”

When was Hogwarts Legacy 2 first confirmed?

Hogwarts Legacy 2 was loosely confirmed in 2024, when a Warner Bros. executive suggested that it could have a modern-day setting. Then there’s the aforementioned shareholders' comment above. Avalanche Software have also been advertising job vacancies for roles that sound suspiciously like Hogwarts Legacy 2.

Who is developing Hogwarts Legacy 2?

Avalanche Software will most likely develop Hogwarts Legacy 2, especially after it did such a great job on the 2023 original.

It will once again also be published by Warner Bros. Games, with Portkey Games overseeing copyright and brand attribution.

Latest Hogwarts Legacy 2 development news

The last meaningful Hogwarts Legacy 2 development update is the aforementioned earnings call when the “second instalment” was teased.

As soon as we get the next meaningful development update from Warner Bros. Games or Avalanche Software, we’ll update you here.

Hogwarts Legacy 2 multiplayer job listings

In 2025, job listings at Avalanche Software were made public for would-be developers to work on multiplayer for an unannounced game.

It would be safe to assume that game could be Hogwarts Legacy 2 given the priority the studio has placed on a sequel to the iconic game.

GAMINGbible verdict: Having online multiplayer would be a feature fans would love, and wandering Hogwarts Castle and its surrounding areas with a friend, completing missions and getting up to all sorts of shenanigans, sounds like an enticing prospect. We’ll just have to wait and see if those unconfirmed rumours come to fruition.

When could the first Hogwarts Legacy 2 trailer be released?

At the time of writing, we can only speculate. The first Hogwarts Legacy trailer was released on September 16, 2020, at the PlayStation Showcase.

So, there’s a possibility history could repeat itself. But as of right now, it’s too early to say for sure, and we’ll update you here once we learn more.

Does Hogwarts Legacy 2 have a release date?

Hogwarts Legacy 2 does not currently have a confirmed release date or release window. We’ll update you here as soon as that information drops.

Could Hogwarts Legacy 2 be released in 2027 or 2028?

That’s a distinct possibility, but as of yet, neither Warner Bros. Games nor Avalanche Software has even hinted at when Hogwarts Legacy 2 might release. Hogwarts Legacy was released roughly three years after its reveal trailer, but hopefully, we won't have to wait that long the second time around.

GAMINGbible verdict: 2027 or 2028 seems the most likely window. If so, Hogwarts Legacy 2 could land just before the arrival of PlayStation 6 and the next-gen Xbox (Project Helix), or shortly after. Should that happen, it’s also likely that it could eventually become a cross-platform title, just like the original Hogwarts Legacy.

When could the Hogwarts Legacy 2 release date be announced?

It’s likely that the Hogwarts Legacy 2 release date could be announced alongside its first trailer, whenever that might drop. As we mentioned earlier, Hogwarts Legacy was announced during a PlayStation Showcase, so that could be an event worth keeping an eye on.

Which platforms could Hogwarts Legacy 2 be released on?

Given the speculative release window we mentioned earlier, Hogwarts Legacy 2 will likely be released on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.

But given how Sony and Microsoft are moving on the next-gen front, we wouldn't rule out PS6 and the next-gen Xbox at this stage - could they be a launch title? Time will tell.

What do we know about the Hogwarts Legacy 2 story and gameplay?

Given what a Warner Bros. executive said about Hogwarts Legacy 2 having a modern-day setting to fall in line with the HBO TV series, it’s possible that it won't take place directly after the events of the first game.

As such, if Hogwarts Legacy 2 does have a modern-day setting, we can rule out returning characters, unless they feature in flashback scenes or prequel DLC.

As for what fans would love to see, not only would online co-op be a welcome feature, but so too would AI companions that allow you to develop a dynamic bond.

Fans would also love to see Quidditch as a playable mode in Hogwarts Legacy 2, a huge omission from the original game. Fans have also spoken about a reactive school system where you attend classes by a timetable and receive grades in those lessons. Perhaps even branching story paths where your choices make more of an impact on the game. This would certainly venture into simulated RPG territory.

We could also not only see a whole host of popular spells return to add to the 34 spells that featured in the original game, but there were also a plethora of exclusions too. Perhaps the three most notable exclusions are: Expecto Patronum, Obliviate and Fiendfyre. There were also a ton of spells hidden in the game files that never made it into the game, so hopefully, some of those leaks might become a reality.
