Spider-Man's New Avengers Status In MCU Clarified By Tom Holland
Tom Holland just opened up about his character's current status as a New Avenger ahead of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day release.
Peter Parker may have survived Avengers: Endgame, but his identity was eventually exposed to the entire world, and he convinced Doctor Strange to cast a spell so everyone would forget who he is. While Peter will still interact with other Marvel heroes, his story this time around is more grounded in street-level crimes, leaving his Avengers status a question mark.
In an interview with ScreenRant's Liam Crowley for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Holland said he believes that Peter Parker/Spider-Man is "sitting right in the pocket" and is "exactly where he belongs as a superhero" in the upcoming film. Instead of teaming up with the Avengers to take on some of the biggest villains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, he's sticking to New York City and being forced to deal with the consequences of his decision to let the world forget who he really is.
As a result, Peter is "really suffering" this time around, which has gotten worse because he's been "neglecting his human side." Putting all of his energy into protecting New York has come at a cost, and that anguish will be on full display in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
"When we're talking about Spider-Man, I think he's sitting right in the pocket. I think he's exactly where he belongs as a superhero, but as Peter Parker, he's really suffering. He's really neglecting his human side. He's giving every ounce of energy he has to protecting the city of New York, and that is coming at a cost."
Making matters worse, he won't be able to lean on his friends to help him through the hardship and misery. Before the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter could rely on Ned as his right-hand man, with MJ being brought into the fold once she figured out that he's really Spider-Man.
During Holland's first Spider-Man trilogy, the superhero went up against the likes of Vulture and Mysterio before the multiverse caused all kinds of havoc that resulted in villains from other universes like Green Goblin, Doctor Octopus, and Electro coming face to face with Peter.
Now, with no one knowing his identity, Peter returns to helping New York City as its friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, but new threats emerge that jeopardize his life once more. Joining Holland for the Destin Daniel Cretton-directed sequel are Jacob Batalon, Zendaya, Jon Bernthal, Mark Ruffalo, Marvin Jones III and Sadie Sink.
Beyond Spider-Man: Brand New Day (which takes place four years after No Way Home), the superhero's future with the New Avengers remains unclear. Marvel Studios has not revealed if Holland appears in Avengers: Doomsday, which arrives in theaters on December 18, even though several characters from the MCU will be teaming up to take on the new villain, Doctor Doom, played by Robert Downey Jr.
For now, though, Spider-Man seems content with being away from the larger Avengers team, at least according to Holland.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day will be released in theaters on Friday, July 31, 2026.
