Check Out Opening for Mexican Anime Inspired by Pre-Hispanic Mythology

Kaiser Animation, an indie Mexican animation studio based in Japan, unveiled the opening of its animation project Tattooani, inspired by pre-Hispanic mythology.

The animation project follows Tattooanis, legendary warriors whose ancestral tattoos let them summon the power of beasts and gods. The warriors seek to reclaim their legacy. The protagonist is Maya, a young man of mixed heritage who becomes the bearer of the tattoo of Tzilacatzin and is on a mission to find a path between two warring peoples before their conflict destroys the world.

Pre-Hispanic mythology refers to the creation myths, cosmological beliefs, and pantheons of ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, including the Aztecs and Maya, and the trailer showcases how the Japanese animation's aesthetic intertwines with the vibrant mythological motifs.
