Yes, it's that time of the year again! EA has officially confirmed the release date for EA Sports FC 27.

More than three decades on from its debut as FIFA International Soccer, the series has cemented itself as the de facto football video game, and one of the biggest series in the world.

And after announcing World Cup Golden Boot winner Kylian Mbappé as its cover star earlier this week, EA has announced that FC 27 will release on 25 September 2026.

The news was confirmed with the release of a brand-new trailer showcasing new features such as an AI defence rebalance, more fluid attacking movement and what appears to be a totally new street football single-player mode dubbed 'The Grounds'.

We even got a brief glimpse at the long-awaited return of Alex Hunter, whose career we played through all those years ago in one of the best modes in the modern series, with him set to appear as a mentor in The Grounds.

Furthermore, as in previous years, players who purchase the Ultimate Edition of the game will receive one week of early access, starting on 18 September, as well as a host of extra perks like FC Points.

Despite continuing to sell millions of copies year on year, recent entries in the series have come in for criticism from both fans and critics.

A perceived failure to innovate on the gameplay front has seen many players search for alternatives such as eFootball, while EA FC's monetisation practices continue to prove controversial, and were a major sticking point in our own FC 26 review.

Considering EA has invented an entire new tier above the Ultimate Edition – the Ultimate Plus Edition – it doesn't look like they've taken many, if any lessons from the criticisms of last year's game.

Still, EA Sports and EA FC fans alike will be hoping that this year's game stops that steady decline and reinvents the game for a new generation.

After all, it's the very least the fanbase deserves after so many years of support for a series that should be doing much, much more.
