10 Years Later, Hellboy Announces New Sequel That Will Return Him to Hell
Hellboy’s original creator is returning to give the Red Devil himself an unexpected sequel to one of the franchise’s greatest stories. This return is especially notable because it sends Hellboy back to Hell, revisiting a setting that once served as the backdrop for his final chapter. Now, we have our first look at what awaits him.
If you're a true die-hard Hellboy fan, then you know the Red Devil's origins aren't in Guillermo del Toro's iconic films, where the legendary Ron Perlman played the Beast of the Apocalypse himself. Instead, Hellboy got his humble beginnings in the comics, where many of his greatest stories still reside. Among the most iconic of these is creator Mike Mignola's Hellboy in Hell.
Kicking off in December 2012, directly after Hellboy: The Fury, in which Hellboy died after sacrificing himself to save the world, Hellboy in Hell followed the character into the afterlife. There, Hellboy had to contend with demons, but this chapter of his mythology was also exceptionally introspective, delivering major revelations about his family and his destiny, making it one of the franchise's most essential reads.
Hellboy in Hell eventually wrapped up in 2016 with issue #10, delivering an unforgettable finale. Now, ten years later, readers are returning to Pandemonium for a brand-new story set during the events of Hellboy in Hell.
