The Bear's Fak Family Tree Explained

The Bear's Fak family tree was one of the more convoluted clans in the series — partly because the show seemed to introduce a new Fak every few episodes. In The Bear's first two seasons, only Neil Fak (Matty Matheson), the bumbling mechanic-turned-server, and Ted Fak (Ricky Staffieri), the even more bumbling handyman, had appeared onscreen.
By the time the show concluded its fifth and final season, several others had been introduced on screen, with even more being mentioned in passing. As The Bear's ever-stressful titular restaurant fell further into disarray, the determined Carmy, Richie, and Sydney needed increasing assistance from Neil and Ted to the point that they evolved from fun bit parts into fully developed characters in their own right.
By and large, the Emmy-winning series centered on the Berzatto family tree, but as Neil and Ted took on larger roles, their own, notably sprawling lineage became a point of interest. Although the Berzatto siblings, including protagonist Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), dubbed folks "cousin" and "uncle" even when they weren't related by blood, the Berzatto clan was much more straightforward than the Faks.
Aside from wondering how, exactly, Uncle Jimmy was connected to Carmy, there were few ambiguities regarding the core family's relationships. Yet with the ever-chatty Neil Fak nabbing his most wholesome story yet in The Bear season 5, it's worth taking the time to understand his expansive family and their incredibly unique dynamic.
Neil Fak
Played By Matty Matheson
One of the most memorable members of The Bear's characters, Neil Fak worked with Jon Bernthal's Mikey and Richie at The Original Beef of Chicagoland. While the character helped sling sandwiches on occasion, he more often served as the restaurant's go-to mechanic. By the end of season 2, though, The Bear's Neil Fak has handed off (almost) all maintenance duties to his younger brother, Ted.
Neil then became a full-time server on Richie's front-of-house crew. Always a chatterbox, Neil demonstrated a unique and endearing brand of shyness as he engaged with the restaurant's distinguished clientele. In perhaps his biggest moment of growth, Neil overcame his insecurities and delivered a positive, memorable experience to the most important guest in The Bear season 5's dinner service.
Theodore "Ted" Fak
Played By Ricky Staffieri
Despite appearing in The Bear season 2's iconic Christmas episode, Ted Fak really made his mark in The Bear's third outing. In the second episode of the season, he appeared to help fix a light in the kitchen; almost immediately, things went awry. Still, Ted had a heart of gold. As he tried to rise in Carmy's friendship ranks, Ted took on more restaurant responsibilities too.
While Neil created an elevated and sophisticated experience for those dining inside the restaurant in The Bear season 5, Ted was the key to Richie's creative solution to their overbooked dinner service. An on-the-fly "garden party" with free drinks and an upbeat energy, courtesy of Ted, kept guests happy while they waited for their tables and gave the restaurant its much-needed intimate environment.
Sammy Fak
Played By John Cena
Sammy Fak's scene-stealing cameo in The Bear saw John Cena turn up out of the blue to lend a hand to his fellow Fak brothers. As the restaurant prepared for a photo shoot with The Chicago Tribune, Cena's Sammy Fak burst into the former Italian beef hot spot. While some viewers found Cena's casting distracting, others fully embraced the comedic actor's appearance on the series.
Cena's drop-in soon proved to be among the first of many, many celebrity cameos as relatives of The Bear's main characters. Though he wasn't alone in giving the show the spectacle of a cameo, Sammy had a singular dynamic with Neil and Ted that brought something fresh to The Bear.
"Uncle Gary" Fak
Neil, Ted & Sammy's Uncle
Although he appeared very briefly in The Bear season 3, episode 7, "Legacy," "Uncle Gary" Fak made an impression. As Neil noted, Gary does share that "particular shape" the Faks have, while his attention was just as easy to derail as Ted and Neil. Like the other Faks, Uncle Gary was a handyman who showed up at the restaurant to lend a helping hand.
Much like Uncle Jimmy, Gary may or may not be a Fak by blood. While there's no reason to doubt his "uncle" moniker, The Bear tossed Uncle Gary into a scene without much additional context for the character.
"Big Neil" AKA Neil Sr.
Neil, Ted & Sammy's Father
Mentioned in name only, "Big Neil" Fak (aka Neil Sr.) was Neil and Ted's father. While father Fak never made an onscreen appearance, his impact was powerfully felt through the unique, pleasant energy and close personal relationships among his children. So much so that it's almost shocking that The Bear never made a point to introduce its viewers to Big Neil.
After all, the Berzattos and the Faks were so enmeshed, and family so heavily emphasized throughout the show, that any absence at a major family gathering felt somewhat noteworthy. Though he would've been a great character to meet, Neil and Ted's combined energy likely painted a realistic picture of what their patriarch was like.
Francie Fak
Neil, Ted & Sammy's Sister
Francie Fak went unseen for most of The Bear's run, and the show took that time to build up quite a bit of drama around her. For quite a while, all that was known about Francie Fak was that Sugar had some kind of history with her, and had since banned her from all family gatherings. Though Neil abashedly admitted to talking to her, the rest of The Bear family largely seemed to support Sugar's position.
In season 4, episode 7, "Bears", Francie, played by none other than Brie Larson, finally crossed paths with the Bear clan at a wedding, where it was revealed that Francie and Sugar had in fact hooked up once many years ago and ended on bad terms, leading to the distance. Prior to that, the two had been close friends, and "Bears" saw them renew their friendship.

Even More Faks Never Made A Physical Appearance
The sheer number of Faks either seen or name-dropped became something of a running gag on The Bear, with Cicero "Uncle Jimmy" Kalinowski (Oliver Platt) even wondering aloud, "How many f**king Faks are there?" It was a fair question, especially given the way new Fak Family members seemed to appear out of nowhere. Other Faks mentioned during The Bear's five-season run include:
