Pokemon has turned Pikachu into a plush so many times that it’s beyond impressive that, after 30 years, it still keeps finding new and unique ways to do it. Especially when those new and unique ways aren’t just giving Pikachu a new hat or jacket, but instead employing the services of a high-end brand so that its latest Pikachu plush can carry a $400 MSRP.

The high-end brand Pokemon has collaborated with to create its latest Pika plush is Steiff. Steiff is a big deal in the toy-making world. It was founded in the 1800s and is credited as being the company responsible for manufacturing the first jointed, factory-made teddy bear.
It’s this combination of craftsmanship and prestige that means together, Steiff and Pokemon can charge $400 for a plush. You might be asking yourself who in their right mind would pay such an extortionate amount for a cuddly toy? You could almost buy a whole Switch 2 for that. Well, at least 350 people have already taken the plunge, and they did not hang around.
Steiff released the first 350 of its limited edition Pikachu plushes a few days ago, and they were quickly snapped up. If you’re overwhelmed by FOMO right now and have $400 of Pokemon spending money burning a hole in your bank account, don’t worry. You haven’t missed the boat. There will be more opportunities to buy this special plush.
Steiff has already revealed exactly how many of these Pikachu plushes it plans to make - 1,996. That number is meaningful because the Pokemon x Steiff collaboration is a part of the former’s ongoing 30th anniversary celebrations, and 1996 was the year in which the original games were released, kickstarting a franchise that is among the biggest in the world three decades later.
The Finer Details
Some details make the plush special, and worth $400 to some fans, outside of its limited availability and Steiff branding. The plush will be delivered to you in a dedicated gift box and have a gold-plated Button In Ear trademark on its tail. The 350 first edition plushes are all individually numbered, making each one unique. It’s unclear if that numbering system will be extended to all 1,996.
Pokemon really is big enough that it needs to appeal to every type of fan, not just across age brackets, but wage brackets, too. Items like this, the $650 Lego set, and the Pokemon x Tiffany collection are geared towards Pokemon fans with a lot of expendable income. Sitting Cuties plushes and some of the smaller Lego sets releasing this weekend, however, cater to the Pokemon fans with more modest and realistic budgets.
