Spider-Man: Brand New Day is an unstoppable force at the box office after its first week in theaters, putting it on track to break an 11-year-old record to become America's highest-grossing movie ever. Sony has always found success with Spider-Man movies at the box office, but the films have reached new heights after joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Each of Tom Holland's Spider-Man MCU movies has made more than the last, putting major expectations on Brand New Day's shoulders. After all, Spider-Man: No Way Home set the box office ablaze in 2021 by grossing $1.9 billion worldwide, riding the wave of theories about multiversal crossovers. The sequel didn't have that element, but that hasn't stopped Brand New Day's box office from breaking records.

The movie debuted to $932 million worldwide, good for the second-biggest global launch in box office history. It's already earned over $1.1 billion and become 2026's highest-grossing movie. International sales have played a significant role in the movie's gargantuan haul, but American viewers have also made it a massive hit domestically, with it adding a new record to its tally every day.

Now that Brand New Day's first week in theaters is over, it has become clear that the all-time domestic box office record is going to fall. Star Wars: The Force Awakens set the record with its $936.6 million gross in 2015. The current trajectory for Brand New Day's domestic box office means it will topple that total.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Is Pacing Ahead Of The Force Awakens' Domestic Box Office Record

Spider-Man's movie got a huge head start on Star Wars from the jump. Brand New Day's opening weekend domestically was at $360 million, which was over $100 million more than what The Force Awakens opened to (unadjusted for inflation). Marvel movies can often be frontloaded at the box office, though, as fans seek the earliest showtimes possible to avoid spoilers. That left some chance that interest could drop quickly.

Instead, Brand New Day has continued to set record daily totals. It followed up having the biggest three-day opening by having the highest totals ever recorded on a movie's first Monday and Tuesday. It maintained strong showings for Wednesday and Thursday, helping it cross $500 million domestically faster than any movie ever has.

After their first weeks in theaters, Brand New Day maintains a $100+ million cushion over The Force Awakens. However, its edge over Star Wars is closing a bit. Brand New Day's Wednesday gross of $32.7 million was the second-biggest non-opening performance, with only The Force Awakens' $38 million being bigger. Brand New Day's exact first full Thursday total was reported to be $29 million, which puts it back in front of The Force Awakens' daily grosses, $27.3 million.

Spider-Man's film may fall behind those days, but it should maintain its lead over Lucasfilm's franchise reboot during its second weekend. Brand New Day has a chance to break The Force Awakens' record for the biggest second weekend of all-time at $149.2 million. It just needs a second weekend drop that's under 59% to do so. No Way Home fell by -67% in that frame five years ago, so Brand New Day will need stronger legs.

But the important thing to note for Brand New Day's chances of surpassing The Force Awakens' record domestic total is that it just needs okay legs to get there. After the opening weekend, it needed a 2.6x multiplier to beat the record. No Way Home had a 3.1x multiplier, while Avengers: Endgame was at 2.4x. There should be more staying power with Brand New Day to get the job done, especially since it's already more than halfway to the total after one week.

Why Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Impressive Box Office Performance Should Last

The good news for Brand New Day is that there are many reasons to believe that it will have sustained interest for weeks. While the movie doesn't get the Christmas holiday bump that The Force Awakens (and No Way Home) received, it's end of July release ensured that it has minimal competition ahead. August's movie slate doesn't have any massive titles that will surely take attention away from Spidey. It could stay the #1 movie in America for several weeks, as long as it stays ahead of The Odyssey.

That will be easier to do since Brand New Day is now playing in IMAX. The movie has done these record-breaking numbers without those PLF (Premium Large Format) screens, while still being available in ScreenX, Dolby, 3D, etc. But Sony and Marvel should see a boost in ticket sales now that audiences can see Spider-Man's adventure on even bigger screens.

Add in the fact that audiences adore Brand New Day (it is Verified Hot at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes' Popcornmeter), and all signs point to the movie keeping its record-breaking run alive. It should swing past The Force Awakens' $936.6 million domestic total when everything is said and done. Perhaps the bigger question is just by how much.

Will Spider-Man: Brand New Day Become America's First $1 Billion Movie?

Clearing The Force Awakens' domestic total by any amount will be impressive for Brand New Day, but doing so by at least $63.4 million would make it the first movie to make $1 billion in America alone. That gap doesn't seem very large when the movie is making that much in a single day or a few days at a time. But that will not last forever, and it will be harder to do the longer Brand New Day has been in theaters, especially if Sony has put it on digital before crossing that milestone.

Still, there is a reasonable chance that Brand New Day can get past $1 billion domestically. It needs a 2.78x multiplier from its opening weekend to achieve that figure. 13 different MCU movies have had legs that strong or better, including all three of Holland's solo films: Homecoming (2.86x), Far From Home (4.22x), and No Way Home (3.13x). So, as long as audiences have as consistent an interest in his fourth installment as they did in the previous three, the $1 billion domestic milestone will be hit.

That gives us a solid range for where Spider-Man: Brand New Day's domestic box office could finish. Matching Homecoming's legs would put it at $1.028 billion. Copying No Way Home's staying power would bring it to $1.126 billion. If it replicates Far From Home's MCU-best legs, a $1.518 billion domestic haul will be ahead. In any of these instances, Spider-Man: Brand New Day will make U.S. box office history in several ways, so long as it maintains its current pace.
