Heavy Rain Effect Made with Custom Unity URP Renderer

Check Out This Heavy Rain Scene Built with a Custom Unity URP Renderer

Mirza Beig showcased a new work.

Technical Artist Mirza Beig impressed the audience with a new eye-catching Unity setup, this time showing a fascinating rain scene. The artist also shared technical details behind the effects.

The scene uses a fast, quarter-resolution rain buffer that accumulates multiple transparent particle systems, ensuring that the effect is lightweight while maintaining high visual quality. The artist achieves a convincing heavy rain look without the performance cost of full-resolution particle rendering. The approach is part of Mirza Beig's ongoing work on a generic and robust custom renderer solution for Unity URP.

In an earlier setup, the creator explored rendering rain particles to a separate texture using additive blending, extracting normals from grayscale to drive screen-space distortion.

Recently, Mirza Beig presented AERO 1.7, the latest version of a volumetric fog and mist Unity shader, which is available for free on the Unity asset store:
