Crimson Desert DLC ban extended as new territories confirmed for refunds

Crimson Desert’s upcoming Charting The Unknown DLC has had its ban extended to two further regions.

It was previously revealed that the expansion will no longer launch in the United Arab Emirates, having been banned from the region, with users who have already pre-ordered set to be refunded.

It’s since been confirmed that Charting The Unknown will no longer launch in Saudi Arabia or Kuwait either.

“Following a review of content and age rating requirements, Crimson Desert: Charting The Unknown will not be available in certain markets/regions,” read the original announcement.

“Pre-orders for these regions will be closed. Depending on the platform, refunds may be processed automatically, or a refund request may need to be submitted through that platform’s standard refund process.

“We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your understanding.”

Crimson Desert’s DLC may have been banned for its potential romances.

The above regions are known to have previously banned games that feature simulated gambling, graphic violence, explicit sexual content, or same-sex relationships.

Crimson Desert: Charting The Unknown promises to introduce the ability to form “deeper bonds” with NPCs.

Many have taken this to mean that romance is being added into the game, especially as Charting The Unknown’s trailer features Kliff down on one knee delivering flowers to an NPC.

It’s possible that the DLC does feature same-sex relationships, perhaps explaining the sudden ban.

It seems unlikely that the DLC will be any more violent then the base game, especially as Crimson Desert opts for spark effects over blood and dismemberment.

In all other territories, the DLC is expected to land on October 15.

It is a paid DLC, so players will need to purchase it for £19.99 / $24.99. Charting The Unknown isn’t included with any pre-existing editions, including the recently released Enhanced Edition.

There’s no word just yet on the precise size of the DLC in terms of its map or download size.

We know that it’ll introduce a ship, allowing for ocean exploration, as well as a dive mechanic for underwater adventures.

The DLC’s trailer has teased new island regions, new foes, and expanded base and business building opportunities.

“New stories unfold across Pywel - from an ominous presence in the desert and a dangerous political conflict to a journey beyond time and an ancient secret beneath the waves. Follow Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane as they forge their own paths forward, discover their purpose, and shape their destinies,” reads the DLC’s synopsis.

It’s incredible, really, that Pearl Abyss is planning to launch such an extensive DLC already when the base game itself only landed in March of this year.

We were all surprised to see the Enhanced Edition land in August, which overhauled the game’s storytelling and cutscenes.

Pearl Abyss is clearly doing everything it can to perfect Crimson Desert ahead of awards season and the incoming GOTY contention race.
