5 Pokémon ROM Hacks That Make Definitive Versions Of Classic Games

There are plenty of Pokémon ROM hacks out there, adjusting existing games in the series to create new adventures in player-created regions, often with new stories and sometimes even fresh, fan-made Pokémon to catch. However, some ROM hacks are not trying to build a never-before-seen region or create a roster of Pokémon from scratch, but rather improve experiences players are already familiar with. These “enhancement” hacks can be huge for the quality-of-life in older Pokémon titles, providing arguably the best version of games players remember the most.
Some ROM hacks like Pokémon Radical Red don’t change much of an original game’s experience other than adding more Pokemon and ramping up the difficulty of different battles. This approach can be appealing for hardcore Pokémon fans, but don’t always come with features that make the core gameplay as approachable as the original titles. The best ROM hacks for game enhancements take into account all the ways a past Pokémon game could get better, whether its an expanded roster or the removal of obstacles seen in the original games.
5. Pokémon Sacred Red World

One of the more unorthodox ROM hacks out there is Pokémon Sacred Red World, which modifies Pokémon FireRed from the series’ third Generation of games. This interpretation of the remade Kanto region gets rid of the linear nature of that location, turning one of the most straightforward locations in Pokémon into something players can approach in any way they please. New shortcuts and removed barriers allow players to travel anywhere they want from the game’s start, basically turning Pokémon FireRed into an open world adventure.
That being said, this game doesn’t make the eight Gym impossible to beat from the start of your journey, either. Every Gym scales to match your badge level, meaning that a majority of trainers have different Pokémon teams that change depending on your progression. For example, you could choose to take on Erika in Celadon City first, and her Grass-type Pokémon will be far lower level than normal. Alternatively, you could face Brock in Pewter City last, and he’ll have more Pokémon that are evolved and at much higher levels than you’d expect.
For those used to the restrictions the Switch 2 ports of Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen have, Pokémon Sacred Red World does away with many of the pains that come with an older franchise game. For starters, there are Pokémon from Gens 1-9 in this game, meaning you’ll never feel restricted by the original Kanto 151. There are also Paradox forms, Mega Evolutions, Gigantamax Pokémon, and even regional forms, meaning that this version of Kanto is perhaps the most up-to-date you could ever experience.
4. Pokémon Yellow Legacy

The original Gen 1 Pokémon games are somewhat dated by current standards, acting as nostalgia for players who appreciate the old GameBoy Color aesthetics of Pokémon Red, Blue, Yellow, Gold, Silver, and Crystal. Yet, the ROM hack Pokémon Yellow Legacy might as well be a remake for Pokémon Yellow, transforming that game into something that blends old and new together in seamless ways. This ROM hack is primarily focused on adding quality-of-life features to Yellow, retrofitting mechanics from later Pokémon games into the Gen 1 title.
New tutorial systems, unique Pokémon party icons, the Running Shoes item from Gen 3 onward, a playable female character Avatar option, and selectable difficulty options are just a few of the improvements this ROM hack implements. Players can choose whether to go through Gen 1 on Normal or Hard difficulty, giving veterans a challenge while newcomers to Gen 1 get an authentic experience with gameplay enhancements. The Pokémon themselves have received a variety of tweaks, including:
- Rebalanced move learning pools
- Stat increases on weaker Pokemon from the game’s roster
- All 151 Pokemon from every version of Gen 1 available to catch
- Availability of all three starter Pokémon (besides just Pikachu)
The way this ROM hack approaches balance is far different from other modified Pokémon games, as it doesn’t seek to make everyone’s favorite pocket monster overpowered. Instead, small buffs are made to Pokémon who need them, and moves are adjusted rather than giving a Pokémon an ability that makes them as strong as a Legendary. With the difficulty changes, these balance changes never feel oppressive, capturing Pokémon Yellow‘s feel without sacrificing it by making something too different.
3. Pokémon Renegade Platinum

Pokémon Renegade Platinum is one of the best enhancement ROM hacks I’ve ever played, but not due to the fact that it makes all 493 Pokémon between Gens 1-4 available to catch. While making all Pokémon in the game’s era accessible is a wonderful feat, the other features in this ROM hack also make it worth playing. One such change is the removal of trade-only evolutions, opening the door for more varied teams with stronger Pokémon than Pokémon Platinum originally allowed with players who didn’t have others to trade with.
There are other great features in Pokémon Renegade Platinum for players to enjoy, such as revamped trainer and Gym battles with more nuanced difficulty. Trainer levels have a better learning curve, meaning each battle is engaging and challenging instead of an outright stomp that doesn’t yield much experience. Other battle changes, such as the inclusion of Gen 6’s Fairy-type, round out the Pokémon systems further than Gen 4 ever could at the time.
Every Pokémon in this ROM hack have overhauled move learning lists, including access to a wider variety of TM and Egg moves for more diverse party builds. Some Pokémon stat adjustments make them better to use, giving players greater room to form whatever team they want. Other quality-of-life changes are abundant in Pokémon Renegade Platinum, such as the Bike being given to you at the start of the game. Eggs hatch faster, Pokémon Natures are easier to see, and TMs are limitless, with increased Shiny chances giving you more opportunities to dive into Pokémon‘s deeper systems without a tedious grind.
2. Pokémon Liquid Crystal

There are few ROM hacks that try to blend Pokémon Generations together for a simultaneous blending of past and present, but Pokémon Liquid Crystal manages to do so almost flawlessly. This game is another Pokémon FireRed ROM hack, but it is a recreation of Pokémon Crystal from the prior Generation of games. This game uses all the visual assets of FireRed and LeafGreen and repurposes them to create the Johto region in that art style, while also updating Kanto to be like it was during your revisit to the area during Gen 2’s postgame.
This ROM hack adds new areas to explore too, putting in locations that expand upon what was already in Pokémon Crystal. For example, your Pokémon can use Dive to reach underwater locations, similar to the same feature in Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald. Day and night cycles return, but fully remastered for the Gen 3 remakes, with new music and graphics reflecting this change too. The Orange Islands region of FireRed and LeafGreen are also featured here, with real-time events in every location making the Johto and Kanto regions feel more definitive than they ever have before.
1. Pokémon Emerald Crest

Pokémon Emerald is often compared to Pokémon Platinum as one of the best games of the series, acting as the pinnacle of Gen 3’s Hoenn region. This common perception of the game makes a ROM hack like Pokémon Emerald Crest incredibly impressive, as it enhances an already great title into something unforgettable. This ROM hack take on the herculean task of adding Pokémon from every Generation into Emerald, putting Gens 1-9 in the same place to make the 2004 game feel like something that was released today.
New stories expand Pokémon Emerald‘s narrative, but its the inclusion of modern features like Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, and unlimited cross-save trading that make Emerald Crest intriguing. The UI/UX interface of the game has been drastically improved, with advanced DexNav features allowing you to find the perfect Pokémon for your squad easily. Seasonal weather systems and community events make the game feel dynamic, with features that reflect how the series has evolved over time.
Anyone who’s a fan of modern Pokémon games will feel right at home through this ROM hack, as Mystery Gift codes and Wonder Trade systems reflect Pokémon‘s recent approach to their games. While the core experience of the Gen 3 game is still present in the Pokémon Emerald Crest ROM hack, it broadens what players are able to do, making it a crossover of classic and new features for players to dive into.
