5 Pokémon ROM Hacks That Make Definitive Versions Of Classic Games
There are plenty of Pokémon ROM hacks out there, adjusting existing games in the series to create new adventures in player-created regions, often with new stories and sometimes even fresh, fan-made Pokémon to catch. However, some ROM hacks are not trying to build a never-before-seen region or create a roster of Pokémon from scratch, but rather improve experiences players are already familiar with. These “enhancement” hacks can be huge for the quality-of-life in older Pokémon titles, providing arguably the best version of games players remember the most.

One such change is the removal of trade-only evolutions, opening the door for more varied teams with stronger Pokémon than Pokémon Platinum originally allowed with players who didn’t have others to trade with.
There are other great features in Pokémon Renegade Platinum for players to enjoy, such as revamped trainer and Gym battles with more nuanced difficulty. Trainer levels have a better learning curve, meaning each battle is engaging and challenging instead of an outright stomp that doesn’t yield much experience. Other battle changes, such as the inclusion of Gen 6’s Fairy-type, round out the Pokémon systems further than Gen 4 ever could at the time.

The Orange Islands region of FireRed and LeafGreen are also featured here, with real-time events in every location making the Johto and Kanto regions feel more definitive than they ever have before.

This ROM hack take on the herculean task of adding Pokémon from every Generation into Emerald, putting Gens 1-9 in the same place to make the 2004 game feel like something that was released today.
New stories expand Pokémon Emerald‘s narrative, but its the inclusion of modern features like Mega Evolution, Z-Moves, and unlimited cross-save trading that make Emerald Crest intriguing. The UI/UX interface of the game has been drastically improved, with advanced DexNav features allowing you to find the perfect Pokémon for your squad easily. Seasonal weather systems and community events make the game feel dynamic, with features that reflect how the series has evolved over time.
