Indie dev turns sleeping wife into grotesque boss character after running out of ideas

Being an indie developer is no easy task, especially if the entire project is being handled by a few or even one person. Getting quality inspirations to make the setting feel unique and have it stand out from all the dozens of game releases happening each day is also important, but getting that inspiration is difficult. One indie developer has managed to solve this issue in a creative way.

Developer JOJOJOJOsoft revealed recently in a Reddit post that after needing a "lore accurate" guardian for a wedding ring, he had turned to his wife for help. The twist is that this help was needed for a dark fantasy RPG with extremely distorted designs for the monster bosses, and he wanted the subject to not pose or "look pretty."

This meant he opted to take the reference shots while his wife was sleeping for the perfect "monster material."

JOJOJOJOsoft's designs don't use any AI generation either, with the developer explaining that he cut out parts of the pictures to arrange them into one monstrous form, with raw meat being the reference material to get the right blood and gore look.

"A horror monster needs blood. Added some red in the crevices, painted in some veins, tendons, and fleshy connections," says the developer, explaining the craft. "Ta-da! After some final color grading, she is ready to be unleashed. You can now queue up to spam your skills on her."

This is not the first time the developer has turned to real-world examples for boss designs. Another post from JOJOJOJOsoft a couple of months ago, seen above, shows a KFC meal also being transformed into a grotesque boss, with him saying, "While eating some fried chicken, I realized that leftover chicken bones actually create some wildly unpredictable shapes!"

Despite the unflattering boss design, it doesn't look like JOJOJOJOsoft's wife is holding a grudge against him. "Thanks for all your concern, guys. But don't worry, my wife is a very gentle soul and doesn't hold grudges over stuff like this," he said in a comment after the monster wife /r/IndieDev post gained popularity on Reddit.
