Godzilla Announces New 5-Part Sequel With Return of Fan-Favorite Design
Godzilla is returning to one of the Kaiju’s most iconic eras with a five-part series that promises to bring back one of the King of the Monsters’ most epic reimaginings. We now have a confirmed release date, along with the first-look images that make it clear this upcoming sequel is shaping up to be nothing short of a legendary return.
As the most iconic franchise in the entire kaiju genre, Godzilla has built a legacy spanning 72 years, 39 films, and a nearly uncountable number of television series, novels, video games, manga, animated projects, comics, and more. Throughout that history, the King of the Monsters has undergone countless reimaginings, reboots, and redesigns. Now, one of Godzilla’s boldest interpretations is returning this fall with a brand-new five-part sequel that continues the story first explored in Starship Godzilla.
If you haven’t heard of Starship Godzilla, that’s understandable, given how expansive the Godzilla franchise has become across multiple forms of media. However, this is one narrative of the Kaiju that fans won’t want to miss. From IDW Publishing, Starship Godzilla is part of the publisher’s new Kai-Sei Era shared universe and takes the franchise in a completely different direction by sending Godzilla’s mythology into outer space. The series follows a crew of alien mercenaries traveling across the galaxy aboard a spaceship version of Mechagodzilla.
The original Mechagodzilla first appeared in 1974’s Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla as a giant mechanical doppelgänger of Godzilla, created in part as a weapon designed to defeat the King of the Monsters. Starship Godzilla, however, introduced a brand-new version of Mechagodzilla, reimagining the iconic machine as part of a much larger cosmic adventure within IDW’s expanding Godzilla universe.
Now, fans will get a much-needed continuation of Starship Godzilla on October 14, 2026, as original series writer Chris Gooch (In Utero, Under-Earth) and artist Oliver Ono (Godzilla: Monster Island Summer Camp) return for the release of Starship Godzilla: Invasion X #1, the first installment of this much-anticipated mini-series.

If you liked Mechagodzilla’s design in Starship Godzilla, then you are going to LOVE the Kaiju’s upgraded look in Gooch and Ono’s Starship Godzilla: Invasion X. The issue’s main cover by Ono, along with a variant cover by Joëlle Jones and an Akira homage variant by Louie Joyce, gives fans their first look at this epic new upgrade. Staying true to the character’s overall mechanized redesign, this version swaps the original series’ primarily silver color scheme for a kick-ass-and-take-names red design complete with turquoise accents.

The crew of Starship Godzilla may have won their first battle against the Xiliens, but in doing so they’ve started the war. As they reckon with their actions, they find themselves in need of upgrades for their ship... with bounty-seeking M Space Hunter Nebula Aliens hot on their trail. Meanwhile, the Xiliens put together the final pieces for their new cosmic kaiju weapon…
As a reminder, the upcoming five-part Starship Godzilla: Invasion X miniseries will serve as a follow-up to the fan-loved Starship Godzilla series. For the best reading experience, fans are encouraged to catch up on the original series before diving into this next chapter of Godzilla’s ever-expanding bibliography.
