Russell Crowe’s Dark True Crime Movie Is Just Weeks Away From Its Netflix Debut
Netflix's upcoming dark true crime movie featuring Russell Crowe in one of its main roles is on the near horizon now, being only a matter of weeks away. Over the years, Netflix has released a wide range of true crime shows and movies, not to mention an assortment of documentaries covering the subject.
The true crime genre is one of the most tumultuous in terms of its releases, as the genre has received criticism in the past for not giving the subject matter at hand a serious enough or detailed enough exploration. However, many of the most praised true crime releases have managed to increase awareness about matters that may have not reached audiences on this level otherwise, or may have been ignored historically because they involved individuals or communities that are often overlooked, meaning they can serve important purposes when handled right.
This makes it all the more crucial that a true crime movie that shows promise in being able to handle its subject matter with the care it deserves while also delving into sensitive topics is set to release soon on Netflix, and expand the genre further on the platform in the modern day.
Netflix's Unabomber Movie Is Set To Release September 2026
Netflix's upcoming Unabomber movie is scheduled to debut on the platform on September 25, 2026, meaning its release is only a few weeks away from now.
The Unabomber movie focuses on the real-life story of the domestic terrorist who was dubbed the Unabomber during the time he was an active threat to the United States, which was from the late 1970s to the mid 1990s. The Unabomber - real name Ted Kaczynski - quickly became the subject of a long-term investigation from the FBI, with his interactions with the press eventually leading to his arrest after Kaczynski's brother noted similarities between the way the Unabomber and Ted Kaczynski wrote.
Unabomber is set to begin before Kaczynski's time as the Unabomber, focusing first on his time at Harvard University - with Russell Crowe playing Henry Murray, a Harvard psychology professor whose experiments on students would involve Ted Kaczynski (played by Jacob Tremblay) - though the film will also focus on the manhunt for Kaczynski years after his time at Harvard.
Russell Crowe's Crime Documentary Movie Follows One Of The Biggest True Crime Stories Of All Time
The history of the Unabomber and the events that led to his eventual arrest and incarceration have been the subject of true crime documentaries for some time because of their important and tragic nature, with Kaczynski being responsible for at least three deaths and a range of injuries as a result of his bombings during his active period as a domestic terrorist.
Kaczynski's case has also had lasting media attention due to the unconventional trajectory of his life, with the individual going from starting Harvard University early at age 16, to becoming a primary person of note and priority to arrest due to his crimes and the psychological torment they inflicted on the public.
With the experiments that Ted Kaczynski experienced at Harvard University being the subject of some later controversy - with Henry Murray's approach to these studies being highlighted for ethical concerns, due to belief the experiments were psychologically damaging - the Netflix Unabomber movie's breadth of focus should provide a spotlight on an often forgotten or ignored part of Kaczynski's life and experience, allowing those curious about the individual's life to gain a better sense of the time before Kaczynski became an active criminal.
