One of Stephen King's most disturbing stories from the 1980s is still keeping its hopes alive for an adaptation.
The iconic author earned fame for writing horror stories, and now there is a growing trend of adapting them into movies or series. Some iterations turned into classics, including The Green Mile, The Shining, and The Shawshank Redemption. Nowadays, filmmakers gamble on some of his overlooked or underrated tales, and among his horrors that have yet to be brought to screen is the 1981 short story, "The Jaunt," despite two past attempts.
Filmmaker Andy Muschietti tried to develop an adaptation of the horror story. However, that project was pushed aside since the director instead opted to helm King's popular novel, It, which was split into two movies. While speaking with Variety about the prequel series Welcome to Derry season 2, Muschietti hinted that his stint adapting King stories is only just beginning, stating: “I cannot talk too much about it because some of them are [active] projects."
While the director did elaborate on what's in development, he confirmed that among the ones "that's not a current project" is "The Jaunt." However, Muschietti was resolute that he "would love to go back to at some point" because that story "blew my mind when I read it. I was 14 or something. It just completely shattered me."
