Sword Art Online Officially Returns Winter 2026
Sword Art Online Will Return This Winter, Mark Your Calendars
Custom image created by Evan D. MullicaneSword Art Online has had no shortage of releases as of late, with its most recent being the expansive new video game, Echoes of Aincrad. However, while the franchise still has plenty coming out or recently released, fans still want to know what's looming on the horizon. It's understandable, especially as Echoes of Aincrad has been out for a short while now, and there's only murmurs and rumors of what is to come next to build hype around it.
Fortunately, the next SAO project has been confirmed, and it is scheduled for release this Winter. That means fans won't have to wait too long until they can get their hands on it, which is always good news. Newcomers to the franchise and dedicated fans alike will want to check this one out, especially if they have any interest in Sword Art Online's latest project and want to see what other stories it has left to tell and what else it has to offer.
While Echoes of Aincrad may have proven to be yet another controversial SAO video game, it absolutely has its fans and the potential to grow into something bigger and better with future installments, spin-offs, or DLC. One can imagine additional floors being covered in a sequel, or Bandai Namco running with the idea of custom-made protagonists and fresh new characters that deviate from the well-known and exhausted plot of the anime.
That appears to be what one of SAO's newest projects is seeking to do, as it is directly fleshing out Echoes of Aincrad. The upcoming DLC, which was initially teased in the game's purchasable expansion pass, is scheduled to release between October and December 2026, although it is more likely to release in the latter half of the year. Existing owners of the Expansion Pack will get immediate access to it when it launches, but those who don't own it can purchase it for $19.99 from their digital storefront of choice.
Currently, there isn't much in the way of information regarding what the DLC will entail. The official Steam store page for the Expansion Pack explains that it is a "completely new side story in Aincrad that can be enjoyed after clearing the main story" and will feature additional companions as well as new encounters, stronger enemies, and "further exploration." It is very likely, considering the ending of the base game, that the core cast will progress to floor 3, although it seems unlikely that a $20 DLC will feature an entire new floor.
While merely speculatory, it wouldn't be terribly surprising to have the DLC be a bridge between Echoes of Aincrad and a potential sequel that explores a minor adventure on a floor between floor 2 (where Echoes is set) and whatever floor the next game chooses to be centered around. This often happened in the original anime, and could mean that the DLC would only feature a small explorable area. Regardless, it is great to be getting more SAO content in 2026, especially one that allows fans to continue the adventures of their custom protagonist.
