Horror Icon Zach Cregger Confirms End Of An Era With His Next Movie

Zach Cregger's next movie, The Flood, marks the end of a career phase.

Cregger got his start as a director with Barbarian in 2022, with the twisty, darkly comedic film quickly establishing him as a filmmaker with a unique voice in the world of horror. Weapons (2025) further solidified this position and was a major hit, and how he's gearing up for the release of Resident Evil on September 18.

Speaking with Variety at San Diego Comic-Con, Cregger shares more details about his planned follow-up to Resident Evil called The Flood. The filmmaker reveals that the movie was written between Weapons and Resident Evil, making the three films part of a unique chapter of his career. Check out his explanation below:

“Flood is my next movie. So after Barbarian I wrote Weapons and Flood and Resident Evil in kind of a blitz. So I wrote these three movies and I didn’t know which one was going to go first. I thought maybe Flood would go before Weapons. The order ended up being Weapons, Resident Evil Flood. You could’ve shuffled that deck – it could’ve been any of them. So Flood is kind of my last movie of this chapter of my life. I’m really excited about it. I feel very, very proud of the script."

As for what to expect from The Flood, Cregger says it will be closer, structurally, to Barbarian and Weapons. It could go beyond these two films in terms of its uniqueness, however, as the director says he's not aware of any movies that have taken this same approach:

"You know, Resident Evil is a very straightforward story. I think it’s weirdness is kind of in how straightforward it is. Flood is another movie that I think is structurally unique. I can’t think of another movie like it. In the way that I think Barbarian and Weapons have structures that are very unique to them, Flood is kind of more in line with that [...] You might have moments, on first watch, where you think the movie is broken, and it’s by design. But when the movie is over it will all be clear.

Cregger is careful not to reveal too many details about The Flood, but he reveals that some pieces are already coming together. If there's one thing he is clear about, though, it's that he can't wait to go start filming:

"I’m really, really proud of it and I feel like the little pieces that we have in place now, in terms of some people that are coming on to it, is very exciting. I’m pumped. If you can’t tell, I’m so excited to go make this movie."

Beyond its unique premise, no substantial story details have been revealed about The Flood. The film is reported to lean heavily into sci-fi, and it could potentially involve outer space.

Anticipation is already high for the project given the reception to Cregger's recent films. Barbarian has a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $46 million worldwide on a small $4.5 million budget.

Aunt Gladys in Weapons

Weapons has a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $270 million on a budget of $38 million. The film also won Amy Madigan an Oscar for her role as Aunt Gladys, a character she is set to revisit in a Weapons prequel.

Resident Evil is still more than a month away from hitting theaters, but the film is already a buzzy one. The first trailers have teased an intense and terrifying adventure set within the world of the popular Resident Evil video games. The movie stars Austin Abrams as a courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital, but his journey is complicated when he encounters hordes of mutated creatures.

Resident Evil marks Cregger's second collaboration with Abrams after Weapons, and it's entirely possible that The Flood will reunite the director with another actor he's already worked with. After Resident Evil's release, it's very likely that more information about Cregger's follow-up project will start to be revealed.

The Flood is already dated for August 11, 2028. To meet this release date, it's likely that production will get underway later this year or early next year, meaning behind-the-scenes images and casting information may not be too far off.
