The first spinoff to be launched in the CSI franchise, CSI: Miami leans into the traditions of police-procedural television, applying its own stylized, all-action twist to the premise of the show that spawned it. No episode exemplifies the spinoff’s unique appeal better than a classic episode that first aired on CBS in May 2010.
The MDPD Crime Lab ranks among CSI’s best teams, but here Horatio Caine and his cohort of investigators are put to the ultimate test by an all-time great villain. Season 8’s “All Fall Down” is the perfect happy-medium between the more action-centered approach of its spinoff series and the lab-based casework of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The episode sees the MDPD Crime Lab struggle to track down a merciless serial killer who taunts them with cryptic clues as to his identity.
Bob Starling is an ingenious but sadistic college professor who enlists one of his students to aid him in his killing spree. As the CSI team scrambles around for answers, it appears that they may finally have met their match. According to classic procedural TV formulas, what should happen next is that they snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
Instead, “All Fall Down” flips this script superbly, by ending CSI: Miami season 8 on a bleak cliffhanger in which most of the lab team are knocked unconscious by a poisonous gas pumped into their building. Back in 2010, franchise fans were left waiting five months to find out how this dark ending would be resolved the following season.

What sets the CSI series apart as some of the best crime shows of the 2000s is their rare ability to combine the most technical aspects of police work with intense investigative storylines that grip us for the duration of each episode. At its best, CSI manages to apply classic genre tropes to the cutting-edge forensic work of its characters.
The CSI: Miami episode “All Fall Down” is a case in point, as the team’s hunt for Bob Starling feels like a Sherlock Holmes-style detective story punctuated with full-throttle action sequences and embellished with elements of both technical procedure and genuine horror. It’s an episode that does it all, yet still feels like it fits firmly within the CSI franchise.
Named after the One Republic song that soundtracks its devastating closing montage, “All Fall Down” strikes the perfect balance between crime thrills and procedural gravitas, before shocking viewers with a dizzying final twist. CSI: Miami has never topped this episode, which remains a major highlight of the franchise to which it belongs.
