The MCU’s X-Men Movie Has Chosen Its Perfect Loki Replacement
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
The MCU's X-Men movie cast reveals appear to have set up an interesting Loki equivalent for Marvel's mutant heroes that is a particularly promising pick for the franchise. It's been a long wait for the MCU timeline, but the film franchise's first dedicated X-Men movie is now on the near horizon, following releases like Deadpool & Wolverine and The Marvels increasingly welcoming Marvel's mutant heroes into the cinematic universe.
Things have only gotten more exciting with the latest news about the MCU X-Men movie's castings, which have revealed a range of talented actors will be taking on the roles of some of Marvel's most beloved heroes. That said, these cast reveals also unveiled at least one villain, who has been addressed early enough to suggest they will be a key player in the film, since only major roles appear to have been announced to us thus far.
Serving as a villain for the MCU's first X-Men movie is a crucial role to say the least, meaning it's important for the franchise to pick the right figure, and execute their story in a way that works and sets up plenty for the future to delve into also. Mercifully, it seems the MCU is taking a leaf out of the Avengers' film book in this regard, since the figure in question here seems to work for the X-Men movie in much the way Loki did for The Avengers all those years ago.
Mister Sinister Being The X-Men Movie's First Confirmed Villain Bodes Well For The Movie
Amid the news about the MCU's new X-Men castings was the reveal that Adam Driver will be playing Mister Sinister in the franchise going forward, serving as one of the first major X-Men villains for the new iteration of the hero team to go up against in the future.
While this is important for more than one reason, it's exciting to note this does make it appear as though Mister Sinister will be the X-Men's first major antagonist, given the role was announced in a way that makes it seem particularly important to the upcoming X-Men movie, and given the role has a major actor like Adam Driver in the front seat.
This is exciting since it mirrors the MCU's approach to the Avengers movies, wherein Loki was used as the team's first major antagonist to ensure the stakes didn't get too high in their initial outing compared to later installments like Avengers: Infinity War, and because having a villain with considerable power but who isn't necessarily one of Marvel's biggest heavy hitters allows for intrigue and excitement without going too far to kick things off.
Similarly, much in the way Loki worked as the MCU's optimal first Avengers villain thanks to his ties to Thor and ability to set up the wider story of the Infinity Saga as a result of his in-universe links to Thanos, Mister Sinister would also work perfectly in this regard as a result of the character's connections to many assorted stories for the X-Men and Marvel's comics more broadly speaking.
Mister Sinister Is A Perfect Choice To Kick Off The MCU's Long-Term X-Men Story Plans
Mister Sinister is first and foremost a great choice of antagonist to introduce into the MCU in the X-Men's first major chapters because the comics often feature clones of Mister Sinister, meaning the X-Men movie would have an excuse it could use to actively kill off one iteration of Mister Sinister while still leaving the villain alive for future storylines.
Throughout the comics, Mister Sinister has been tied to a range of major story reveals, including him manipulating the lives of several X-Men for many years - which would work well for an MCU reveal - having met and gained the ire of Wolverine in the 1900s, and having been involved in a series of harrowing experimentations on many mutants, which would link into the MCU's current mutant setup well given the events of Spider-Man: Brand New Day also introduce the idea that people already been unethically experimenting on mutants with notable powers.
With Mister Sinister's comic history having ample material that can be used to flesh out the MCU's X-Men narrative and link many different parts of the franchise together, the choice to introduce the character this early into the X-Men's time in the full MCU spotlight makes a lot of sense, and bodes particularly well for the upcoming X-Men movie.
