Why Ted Lasso Season 4 Recast Henry & What It Means For The Show

Apple TV's Ted Lasso has recast a major character in season 4. The entire Lasso family is moving across the pond to join the titular coach in London, where Ted (Jason Sudeikis) is about to embark on a different yet no less exciting kind of challenge: leading AFC Richmond's newly formed women's team.

Ted Lasso is easily one of the best original shows on Apple TV right now, and its satisfying conclusion in season 3 ensured it cemented its legacy. Surprisingly, though, Ted Lasso has now returned for season 4, three years after the sports dramedy originally ended. Those same three years have passed in the show as well, as viewers are reunited with Ted settled into a routine, working as an assistant manager at a grocery store.

Naturally, his family can tell he's not happy with his job. In Ted Lasso season 4, episode 1, "Home," his ex-wife, Michelle (Andrea Anders), his mom, Dottie (Becky Ann Baker), and even his son, Henry (previously played by Loki's Gus Turner), are all surprised that he's planning to turn down Rebecca's (Hannah Waddingham) offer to come back to Richmond. In the end, they all encourage him to take the job, happy to join him on this next adventure. With Michelle and Henry coming along, Henry's role in Ted Lasso season 4 will be much bigger — and, reportedly, more athletic.

Ted Lasso Season 4 Recast Henry With Grant Feely

In Ted Lasso's first three seasons, Gus Turner played Ted and Michelle's son, Henry. The actor appeared in 11 episodes of the show's original 34-episode run. Though he visited his dad in London a few times, much of Turner's time on screen was limited to FaceTime calls, including their short-lived chat in Ted Lasso's much-loved Christmas special. According to Deadline, which first reported in March 2025 that Henry's role was up for recasting, Turner was invited to re-audition for the part.

However, in season 4, Henry's character is now played by Grant Feely, best known for his role as a young Luke Skywalker in Obi-Wan Kenobi and as a ghost kid in both Five Nights at Freddy's movies. Following the show's three-year time jump, Henry is now 12 years old — Feely was 13 during the shoot — and, in the season 4 pilot, about to graduate from elementary to middle school. Clearly, Ted's new job couldn't have come at a better time.

Everything We Know About Henry's Role In Ted Lasso Season 4

While Apple TV has not made any official comments about the recast, Feely himself has implied that the main reason Henry's part needed to be recast was that the character would be playing much more soccer on-screen, telling Birmingham Parent, "I had to practice a lot of soccer for this role!" This is already apparent in the first episode, where Ted, Michelle, Dottie, Rebecca, Keeley (Juno Temple), and Higgins (Jeremy Swift) all attend one of Henry's soccer matches.

With his dad back at AFC Richmond and the family now living in London, Henry will be around the beautiful game all the time. He'll likely join a new local football league, potentially showing his skills in training sequences that parallel the women's team’s storylines. This, in turn, could subtly cement the show's core theme of growth across generations. Ted might take on a more involved role in Henry's soccer career now, too, as he wasn't coaching his son's team back in Kansas City.

Regardless of what Henry's continued role will be in Ted Lasso season 4, it will be interesting to see how the show will use his expanded presence to reflect Ted’s evolving legacy. As the new season develops, the show will likely focus on Ted embracing fatherhood full-time while regaining his footing as a coach, which would perfectly align with the show's theme of balancing personal responsibility with professional commitment. As Dottie said in the Ted Lasso season 4 premiere, it'll be good for Henry to see his dad doing a job he genuinely loves.
