It's Official, Disney Lorcana Is Finally Getting A Digital Client
It's been a long time coming, but we finally have confirmation that a digital version of Disney Lorcana is in development; unfortunately, we have no idea when we'll be able to play it.
Revealed during the D23 Lorcana panel, the quick teaser only confirmed the client is in development, alongside an image of a phone and laptop giving us a good idea that it will be heading to those platforms. We also get a link to visit, but it doesn't appear to work in every region, which makes me worry that when the eventual rollout happens, it may not be available everywhere.
There are plenty of ways to play Disney Lorcana online with friends, with everything from Spelltable-esque apps that let you live stream your board state to other players, or games like Tabletop Simulator having mods that add the cards to the game and let you play that way. Some of these methods have been shut down over time, largely because they infringed on trademarked property, but it was always believed the ulterior motive was that Ravensburger was working on its own project, too.
We now have confirmation that this is the case, and while there's no telling just how long this has been in the works, one thing we do know is that there's no release date or even alpha/beta tests on the immediate horizon.
You can use this link to register your interest in project updates, but curiously, it doesn't work in the UK. Adjusting the hyperlink to a US-based link brings the page up, so we can only hope this is a bug rather than intentional; otherwise, it suggests the digital version may be region-locked for an unknown reason.
As great as this announcement is, it really should have come alongside some form of date. That didn't need to be a release date, just a date for when we can expect more, or when players can expect to receive the first updates. Even a general timeline would have helped, since announcements like this can stir up frustration when they're made and then everything goes quiet for an extended period.
This Can Only Be Good For The Game, If It Reaches Its Potential
If we use the other popular trading card game clients as an example, Disney Lorcana could be on the verge of huge growth, as players who don't engage with Disney Lorcana because they don't have access to an LGS or a friend group to regularly play the game are about to have a new route in.
It worked for Magic: The Gathering with Arena, and it works for Pokemon with TCG Live, so it's an almost sure thing for Lorcana, too. The more ways there are to play, the better.
Obviously, there are plenty of details we still don't know, and if Ravensburger gets any of the big decisions wrong, the fan base will let them know about it, especially when it comes to monetization, but that's thinking too far ahead, so for now, we can just look forward to the digital version of Lorcana and learning more about it, hopefully, sooner rather than later.
