Pokémon Fans Are Rebelling Against The Closure Of A Major Feature

Pokémon is constantly evolving, with new experiences offering fans a plethora of exciting ways to engage with the franchise and old ones being slowly phased out. However, with evolution comes change, and while some change is understandably encouraged and often for the best, it can occasionally be detrimental to both the fan's overall experience and the franchise as a whole. Pokémon's changes, both mechanically and creatively, have typically been for the best; however, in this case, it may have been a mistake.

Amid the massive Pokémon 30th anniversary celebrations, The Pokémon Company quietly announced the closure of a major feature that fans have come to love since its inception. Naturally, this has caused quite a bit of ire to bubble within the wider Pokémon community, who have taken to posting their rather negative reactions online. While it is unlikely to be enough to convince The Pokémon Company to back down, it is, at the very least, a clear indication that this key Pokémon feature will be sorely missed.

One of the many amazing Pokémon releases that has come out over the past decade is Pokémon Bank. The cloud-based service allows players to store their Pokémon from across several mainline titles on the Nintendo DS and 3DS into private boxes. These Pokémon could then be imported into compatible titles, ostensibly allowing users to take Pokémon from older games and put them into their save files on more modern titles. It was an excellent and completely free Nintendo 3DS app that is beloved by many users.

Sadly, The Pokémon Company has confirmed that it is officially shutting down Pokémon Bank as of February 26, 2027. Once the app is taken offline, any Pokémon remaining in those aforementioned private boxes will be lost unless they're transferred to Pokémon HOME, the app that has all but replaced Pokémon Bank and allows transfers to and from more recent Nintendo Switch titles. The big issue here is that Pokémon HOME costs money, whereas Bank never did, meaning that consumers are losing out on a free product and being forced to use a paid one.

This has, naturally, caused a little bit of outrage amongst the Pokémon community. On an X post from CentroLeaks (who merely reported on Pokémon Bank closing), users have made their concerns and frustrations known. User sacchan replied to the post stating, "and here goes Nintendo making fans depressed again despite the fact they make massive profits," with user Vers La Lune agreeing, responding, "this might be the worst decision they've ever made."

While some are not completely against the decision and understand the huge costs incurred by running the servers, others believe that The Pokémon Company earns more than enough to keep services like Pokémon Bank going a little longer. User paranoid schizophrenic wrote: "the highest-grossing multimedia franchise of all time, who has made over 118 billion dollars since conception, and they are destroying servers they said they would keep up less than half a decade ago."

User AKA-Link 77 went as far as to suggest that "this is why there should just be a universal storage system that is web based, not console/app based." While it's unlikely to make anyone jump over to Pokémon's biggest new competitor, it is yet another frustrating decision from a company that can't seem to get anything right in this current generation. Pokémon will always perseverebecause its fandom is so dogmatically loyal, but fans are evidently reaching a breaking point that could finally prove enough to hurt the franchise where it truly matters: the bottom line.
