Hideo Kojima breaks ties with PlayStation, partners with Xbox for "genre-defining action-espionage title"
The Hideo Kojima x PlayStation romance is over, as Sony has dropped support for Kojima's upcoming project Physint, leaving Xbox to step up to the plate.
Kojima revealed the new partnership in a post to social media, detailing the situation.
"In mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the Physint project," he wrote. "Physint is an important project both to me personally and to Kojima Productions.
"Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in Xbox a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again.
"Please rest assured that development of Physint, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward."
Alongside Kojima's announcement, Xbox provided its own statement via CEO Asha Sharma.
"Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life," Sharma said. "We're honoured that Kojima-san has chosen Xbox to work with Kojima Productions on Physint. His ambition to change conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at Xbox."
With PlayStation out of the picture, it is hardly a surprise that Kojima has decided to work with Xbox to continue development on Physint, with the duo having already partnered on his upcoming horror title OD.
While the headline to this partnership is undoubtedly Physint's development, there is an interesting line in the Xbox statement declaring: "In addition to OD and Physint, this relationship will also extend beyond games, with Xbox and Kojima Productions collaborating across film and television to bring new stories to a broader audience."
Kojima is already working on film and anime adaptations of Death Stranding, and this only serves to inspire speculation that OD and Physint may receive their own adaptations in time too.
