Hulu's New Thriller From New Girl Creator Is Already One Of The Best Crime Dramas Of 2026

While viewers know Elizabeth Meriwether best for her hit comedy New Girl and her award-winning drama Dying For Sex, her newest project on Hulu has quickly become one of the best crime dramas of the year. Meriwether, who first found success in the industry writing the 2011 romantic comedy No Strings Attached, which starred Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher, quickly moved into television after the success of the film. New Girl, which ran on Fox for seven seasons from 2011 through 2018, was a massive success as well, with Zooey Deschanel embodying Meriwether's quirky, plucky, lovable main character, Jessica Day.

Throughout her time on New Girl, Meriwether worked on other projects, and once the show was over, she didn't slow down creatively. Meriwether was the creative force behind the short-lived series Single Parents on ABC, which ran from 2018 through 2020, and continued with the network to create Bless This Mess, a one-season series that starred Dax Shepherd and Lake Bell, who co-created the series. In 2022, Meriwether wrote and produced The Dropout for Hulu, a miniseries starring Amanda Seyfried about the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes. She then went on to create Dying For Sex, another hit.

As a writer and producer, Meriwether's range has been fascinating to watch as she's moved through her career. From comedy to drama and back again, Meriwether's ability to tell a story hasn't faltered, and in her latest project, Hulu's Furious, that ability to weave a great story is tremendously clear.

Furious Stars Emmy Rossum As An FBI Agent Hunting A Female Serial Killer

A series loosely based on the '80s movie of the same name, Furious follows Emmy Rossum's Alice Black, a former NYPD detective who moves to the FBI after ending an abusive relationship with a fellow detective, Marshall (Jake Lacy). Alice's work with the FBI at the start of the series is less-than-ideal as she spends her days answering calls that come from the general public, but it's something she takes seriously as she attempts to move up in the ranks. When Alice gets brought into an investigation by a former colleague and close friend, Danny (Scoot McNairy), everything changes.

Alice and Danny, along with the help of the head of the FBI's sex crimes unit Nora Washington (Quincy Tyler Bernstine), begin to investigate the case of a female serial killer who's always just a step ahead of their task force. The show moves between Alice's story and Catherine's (Lola Petticrew), the serial killer she's tracking down. A survivor of sex trafficking, Catherine's crimes are methodical and fascinating, leaving Alice and the rest of the task force struggling to keep up with her. Seeing both perspectives on the series is just one of the ways Furious stands out.

There's Still Time To Catch Up On Furious Before Season 1 Ends

Although the first five episodes of Furious have already come out, there are still three more episodes with weekly releases. The first season finale will air on August 31, which gives viewers time to catch up on the series ahead of its surely climactic end. Furious is one of the darkest, most complicated crime dramas in the modern streaming era, and watching a female serial killer at work is always a joy as it unfolds. While the series takes a dual perspective, its sense of quiet observation makes it all the more interesting, with the show's perspective never taking sides.

With Rossum and Petticrew both doing tremendous work as their characters move through their lives, both thinking about one another and considering what's happening in their interior lives, the show is able to put together a specific puzzle as it moves through its episodes. While there's not much news about whether Furious will be returning for another season or is poised to be a miniseries, the Hulu hit has been a great win for the platform. Getting the chance to jump in on Furious is an opportunity viewers shouldn't miss.
