Diablo fans, time is running out to try World of Warcraft's surprise new RPG demo

World of Warcraft fans, rejoice! There's a free Talebound playable demo available this weekend, and it's an especially exciting treat if you're a fan of the popular action RPG series Diablo. However, this demo is only available for a limited time, so you won't want to leave it too late to jump in.

Developed by Blizzard Entertainment, World of Warcraft is one of the most popular MMORPGs of all time. The franchise began in 1994, before WoW launched in 2004 and introduced players to the vast fantasy world of Azeroth.

Over the years, players have embarked on countless adventures, created beloved characters, made lifelong friends through guilds and, of course, given us the legendary Leeroy Jenkins meme and the best episode of South Park ever! WoW has continued to evolve, attracting new generations of fans along the way.

What is World of Warcraft's free Talebound demo?

The latest expansion, World of Warcraft: Midnight, launched in March 2026. Now, as part of its upcoming Echoes of the Worldcore content update, a brand-new PvE game mode called Talebound is on the way, but you can get an early taste of it today.

“Prepare to be drawn into the macabre world of Talebound, where you become part of the dark chronicles of a mysterious Storyteller, chillingly brought to life,” reads the description on the official WoW website.

“You’re a lone traveller, journeying down a darkened road where you’ll encounter a mysterious storyteller who pulls you into a world of his own creation. This is the very beginning of your adventure in Quillgrave. Venture solo or with friends through eerie tales, where danger is written on every page.”

How long is the WoW Talebound demo available, and how do you play it?

The World of Warcraft: Midnight Talebound demo is available to play right now, but it ends on Monday, November 2 at 10am PDT/5pm GMT, so you’ll need to jump in to see what the game is all about before then.

The demo is a PTR (Public Test Realm), and everyone can play it, so you do not need a WoW subscription. You just need a capable PC. The demo is only available on Battle.net, and not Steam or the Epic Games Store.

How to access and play the demo

Firstly, you'll need to create or sign in to your Battle.net account before opening the launcher.

  1. Open the Battle.net launcher and select World of Warcraft.
  2. From the game version dropdown menu above the Play button, select the Public Test Realm (PTR).
  3. Download and install the PTR client, which is a separate installation from the main game.
  4. Once installed, launch the PTR and jump into Talebound to try out the demo.

What else should you know about the WoW Talebound demo?

  • Returning players with lapsed subscriptions can play the demo without renewing.
  • Existing players can access it through PTR.
  • You can play Talebound solo or co-op with friends.
  • It has three playable classes: Slayer, Inquisitor, and Witch.
  • It has three playable tales: Darkhaven, Greenthistle Wood and Greywake’s Expedition.
  • There are three difficulty settings: Normal, Veteran and Heroic.

While you can try out the free Talebound demo for a limited time, the full game mode is expected to arrive as part of WoW: Midnight's Echoes of the Worldcore update. However, Blizzard hasn't confirmed exactly when that's happening yet.
