2026’s Design and Technology GCSE results mapped and what they tell us

As the happy servant of a sixteen-year-old collecting his GCSE results today, I can confirm that, like many parents, the experience is equal parts exciting and anxiety-inducing. Sadly, I couldn’t persuade him to choose Design and Technology.
This is a familiar frustration. Out of the typical nine GCSEs, creative and practical subjects get squeezed out by the pressure of ‘hard’ academic priorities. Once you lock in the three Sciences, English, English Literature, Maths, a language, and History or Geography, a child is left with essentially one free slot where they can choose something a little different. Driven in part by the EBacc push of recent years, subjects like Art, Drama, Music, Computer Studies, and Design and Technology end up fiercely fighting for that final spot. For my son, a die-hard sports nut, PE won out. I didn’t stand a chance of convincing him otherwise.
The broader consequence of this timetable crush is stark. Analysing recent Ofqual and JCQ data, we mapped out how regional take-up of GCSE Design and Technology has evolved over the past decade. Hover over the map below and you’ll see that most regions have lost anywhere from 25% to nearly 50% of their candidate numbers.

In the North East, entries plummeted by 46.6% (falling from 5,800 candidates in 2017 down to 3,100 in 2026), shrinking the student share from 6.4% to 3.4%. By contrast, Northern Ireland saw the gentlest contraction at 28.1% (from 5,400 down to 3,880). Could Northern Ireland be quietly positioning itself as the UK’s next major design hub?
Here at Design Week, we understand the bind schools face when timetables tighten – especially for pupils tagged as high achievers. Yet design is vital to our collective future. Seeing classroom participation drop so sharply feels disheartening.

However, a closer look at the grade outcomes reveals an intriguing paradox.
Discounting the pandemic spikes of 2020–2022, overall achievement in Design and Technology has actually seen a steady, structural uptick. Top-tier outcomes (Grade 7+) rose from 20.5% in 2017 to 23.5% in 2026, while standard passes (Grade 4+) climbed from 63.5% to 67.3%.
This isn’t because the exams got easier. Rather, as total entries contracted from roughly 120,000 to 76,000 under EBacc pressure, non-specialist entry streams dropped away. What remains is a highly self-selected cohort: passionate pupils backed by dedicated, well-resourced D&T departments.
Regional performance mirrors this shift. Northern Ireland (28.9%) and Greater London (28.5%) consistently lead the country in top-tier grades, while Wales made remarkable strides over the decade, lifting its Grade 7+ rate by 5.1 percentage points to 24.1%. Yet inequality persists: a 7.7 percentage point gap remains between top performers and regions like the North East and Yorkshire (21.2%), driven largely by unequal access to CAD/CAM software, modern workshop equipment, and specialist teaching staff.
So, how should we read these results? On one hand, many brilliant designers never studied the subject at school – they discovered their craft through problem-solving in other fields, foundational lessons up to Year 9, or self-directed online learning. Today’s young people have unprecedented access to tools and information.
On the other hand, a shrinking, highly specialised talent pool raises an urgent question for our industry: is this self-selection a sign of student resilience, or are we watching design education retreat into a privileged niche that desperately needs policy intervention? Please comment below.
