Brand Identity: Restaurant Elm by József G Kiss
József G Kiss crafts a painterly brand identity for Restaurant Elm in Helsinki, merging Linda Linko art with cyanotypes and Nordic type.
Set inside the historic Puistokatu 4 wooden villa in Kaivopuisto, Helsinki, Restaurant Elm balances Mediterranean warmth with restrained Nordic modernism. Art director József G Kiss built the visual identity around the expressive painting style of Finnish artist Linda Linko, whose original canvas hangs prominently inside the dining space. Rather than defaulting to sterile Scandinavian minimalism, the identity embraces spontaneous gestural brushstrokes, vivid cobalt ultramarine blue, and handcrafted cyanotypes capturing culinary ingredients from sliced citrus to delicate stemware.
Typographic Experimentation and Cyanotypes in Brand Identity
The custom logo mark functions as an expressive brushstroke signature, appearing across both physical and digital touchpoints with fluid rhythm and confidence. Stamped in blue ink onto deckle-edged handmade cotton paper, the Elm mark becomes an intimate dining artifact tucked inside silver coupes and presentation envelopes. Kiss pairs this painterly gesture with crisp, spaced typography set in rich blue ink across printed dining menus, takeaway packaging, and blind-debossed lunch cards, achieving an airy balance between classical French brasserie heritage and tactile craft.
Spatial applications thoughtfully extend this graphic language into the physical restaurant architecture. Large-scale ultramarine brushmarks and crisp white vinyl window decals frame panoramic winter views over Kaivopuisto park, while exterior blue steel A-frame pavement signage signals the warm hospitality within. Handcrafted cyanotype prints depicting wine carafes, citrus fruit cross-sections, and heirloom tomatoes are framed throughout the dining rooms, grounding the dining experience in material artistry and photographic craft.
The photographic direction by Sofia Kulianu and media direction by Emma Ranne capture the natural daylight filtering through the villa windows, highlighting the deep contrast between the cobalt prints and the warm wooden interior paneling. From responsive digital touchpoints to bespoke foil-stamped gift stationery and embossed wine lists, each element reinforces the dialogue between Mediterranean culinary passion and Nordic architectural restraint. The result is a cohesive brand identity that feels both effortlessly spontaneous and meticulously crafted.
