The Weekend With Can Can Press

If you know co-founders of multidisciplinary creative studio, publisher, and Risograph printing press Can Can Press, then you’ll be aware of the duos numerous, and very successful creative side-gigs. Not only did they start Can Can back in 2017, they’ve since become founders of streetwear label Underground Souvenirs and Hardcore Art Book Fair – bringing independent publishers and creatives together from around the world to gather annually in CDMX. But that’s not all – alongside the studios unique retro-graphic identity projects and creative direction, they’ve also been instrumental in founding and shaping the visual world of listening bar and nightlife venue Martiniano – the studio’s extension into the nightlife space.

With this unique cross over of art, editorial design, publishing, fashion, and music that intersects the studio, we thought there would be no one better to take us round a typical weekend in Mexico City. This catch up with both Jackie and Gabino also just so happened to produce the most incredible food guide – the best asada tacos on the block and cuba pintada’s at their local cantina included! If you we’re considering a Mexico trip soon, this might be your sign to book the flight...

You’ll find me at...

Jackie: “We’ll be at Hardcore Art Book Fair, of course! We organise the fair ourselves, and this year we celebrated its second edition. The next one is happening in 2027, and it would definitely be our perfect creative date: spending the day surrounded by publications, talks, workshops, friends, and people sharing things we’re excited about.”

I’ll be reading…

Gabino: “Probably drinking sobacha and reading La Escabrosa, an annual Mexican magazine dedicated to paranormal stories, strange encounters and everything unexplained. Definitely something to slowly flip through on a weekend.”

Jackie: “I’d probably be giving my friends amateur Tarot readings with Experimental Tarot by Samvado Gunnar Kossatz, a deck Gabino got me in Paris. It’s filled with digital collages, astrological symbols, and New Age-looking graphics. I’m definitely not an expert, but I’ve been having fun trying to read it.”

I’ll be eating...

Jackie: “Our perfect day out would start with coffee from % Arabica, drinking it while walking around Parque España. For lunch, we’d get asada tacos and an ate con queso quesadilla at Los Caramelos or oysters at El Tibur, then end the day with dinner at Voraz. And if you’re still up for a cuba pintada (rum & coke) after dinner, El Centenario is our favourite neighbourhood cantina.”

I’ll be watching...

Gabino: “Next on my watch list is Tromeo and Juliet by Lloyd Kaufman. I watched the trailer recently and immediately added it to the list!”

Jackie: “Phenomena by Dario Argento. Suspiria is one of my favourite films, and I’ve been meaning to watch more of his work for a while, so this one is next on my list.”

This is on repeat in my headphones…

Gabino: “Los Vaguens, a Mexican band that reminds me of the sounds of José José and classic Mexican ballade.”

Jackie: “Anabalina by Las Grecas. I love this song and have had it on repeat lately.”

A memento from your weekend with me...

This is the space where creatives leave us with something to look at from the weekend we’ve spent with them. It could be anything really – a drawing, a picture or just something cool they think you should have a little look at.

Gabino: “A sneak peak of what we’ve been archiving lately and soon to become a book!
