Print publications that treat contemplation as their primary aesthetic standard remain rare. Still Magazine Issue 00 was conceived from the ground up to slow down the reading experience through generous negative space and rhythmic pacing. Produced by Still Studio with creative and art direction by Florian Cornut of Habillage Graphique, the 200-page inaugural publication frames Lisbon as a fertile observational laboratory. Rather than presenting a conventional tourist survey or commercial cafe guide, the editorial design investigates the Portuguese capital through its geometric streetscapes, independent coffee houses, and the people shaping the contemporary scene. The content moves across interviews, essays, photography, and illustrations without rigid hierarchical breaks, treating technical agronomy and personal memoirs with equal visual respect.

Swiss Grid Discipline and Coffee Culture Storytelling

The layout architecture relies on a versatile multi-column Swiss grid that balances asymmetrical text frames with panoramic photography. Typographic pairings establish an understated dialogue between modern geometric precision and calligraphic warmth. Cornut selected TT Commons Pro from TypeType as the primary workhorse, allowing compact captions and structural body text to sit comfortably against expansive whitespace. For titling accents and reflective pull quotes, Alga from Nova Type Foundry introduces organic serif nuances that echo the botanical origins of the coffee bean. Essays by coffee luminaries including Scott Rao and Maxwell Colonna-Dashwood unfold across varied column measures, avoiding predictable magazine patterns and sustaining visual curiosity across longform reading sessions.

Material Craft, Munken Paper, and Printing Architecture

Physical production honors the tactile reality of the printed page through uncompromising paper selection and manufacturing precision. Printed in France by Manufacture d'Histoires Deux-Ponts, the publication utilizes 300g Arena Rough Natural FSC Mix Credit from Fedrigoni for its sturdy, textured cover. The tactile cover features an architectural photograph by Ly Takai, framing Lisbon through soft natural light and subtle chromatic restraint. Inside, the 200 pages are printed entirely on 120g Munken Pure Rough, an unvarnished woodfree stock that imparts tactile warmth, deep ink saturation, and effortless page-turning flexibility. The lay-flat binding invites the reader to linger on intricate double-page spreads where monochrome line art and full-bleed photography meet.
