Versammlung der Mikropolitiken

Solidarity-based initiatives, self-organised meeting places, artistic interventions, utopian festivals and social architectures are springing up from the holes in the fabric of our cities. Micropolitical practices take up local relationships, needs and interests, create social and spatial realities, and in doing so undermine entrenched political processes. This book thus focuses on those micropolitical approaches and ways of being which, in many places, draw on the agency of everyday relationships and thereby radically transform the city from within its cracks.

The Versammlung der Mikropolitiken (“Assembly of Micropolitics”) was an event organised in 2023 by the Hamburg-based association Mikropol, which brought together various protagonists involved in micropolitical practices. Published by Adocs, the book brings together the invited guests as well as other pioneers and, in the form of a reader, provides a space for documentation, theoretical approaches and reflections.

The prominent headline typeface Times Dot by Laurel Schwulst refers to the concept of ‘holes in the fabric of cities’. Its enlarged dots create visual holes throughout the book. As a Creative Commons variant of the classic Times New Roman, the typeface itself constitutes an intervention in favour of de-capitalisation, similar to the urban policy practices of the book’s contributors.
