Web Design: Point of View by Anna Hodarkovskaya

Anna Hodarkovskaya designed the web design for Point of View, tracing eyewear history through scroll transitions and typographic craft.

Most digital longreads treat typography like an afterthought, dumping endless paragraphs into generic single-column templates. Point of View takes the opposite route. Researched, designed, and developed by Anna Hodarkovskaya, the project turns the history of optical lenses into an interactive exhibition. The layout opens with stark diopter scales, braille accents, and crisp technical diagrams that immediately establish the ocular theme. Nothing in this grid feels accidental. It relies on sharp scale contrasts to pace the reader, pulling the eye downward through centuries of lens experimentation without relying on decorative clutter. It’s an exercise in discipline.

Web Design Driven by Historical Optics

Scroll mechanics set the pace. As you move through the viewport, the page blurs and sharpens to simulate optical focal lengths and focal shifts. Early sections introduce blurred historical portraits of figures like Alexander Pushkin, Marie Antoinette, and Catherine the Great. They reveal how uncorrected vision isolated scholars before wearable optics arrived. From there, the editorial web design transitions smoothly into the eleventh-century reading stone — polished glass hemispheres monks rested on illuminated manuscripts. The layout sandwiches manuscript fragments between wireframe curvature diagrams, giving tactile weight to ancient reading tools.

The technical restraint stands out. Hodarkovskaya pairs bold grotesque display headings with delicate mono-spaced metadata, tracking the leap from Northern Italy’s thirteenth-century rivet spectacles to twentieth-century pop icons like John Lennon’s round frames. Wireframe lens vectors rotate alongside interactive timeline modules, shifting the narrative from medical utility to personal self-expression. Each chapter flows into the next through careful scroll choreography that highlights how materials evolved from horn and bone into lightweight wire and acetate. By anchoring complex historical research in clean web design, the site lets the typography do the heavy lifting.
