Editorial Design: Die neue Tradition by Schickeria Studio
Die neue Tradition by Schickeria Studio features a bold editorial design system to frame contemporary artworks with stark typographic hierarchy.
For the exhibition at Schaumbad Graz, Schickeria Studio established a visual language that relies on an uncompromising approach to editorial design. The design deliberately positions itself as a quiet yet structured backdrop, ensuring that the artists’ work remains at the center of attention. Stark black and white contrasts dominate the visual identity, creating a high-tension aesthetic that feels both raw and archival. A custom open magazine mockup by Lukas Dieml serves as the primary publication layout to display the print pages. By using simple metal hangers to display printed sheets on walls, the installation method reflects a direct, functional mindset. The color palette avoids decorative accents, opting for deep black fills and plain white paper stock that highlight the content.
A Contemporary Exhibition Framework Through Editorial Design
The catalogue layout demonstrates how disciplined editorial design functions when diverse artworks require a unified presentation. A strict grid structures the columns, alignment zones, and letter-spaced metadata. Large, heavy headings sit against small body text, establishing an intense scale contrast that guides the reader. Page numbers and technical details are pushed to the absolute margins to preserve breathing room on every page. The hierarchy remains legible, using strict layout rules rather than graphic decoration to divide sections. This editorial grid ensures that the print catalog reads with a rhythmic, predictable pace, guiding visitors through the gallery space.
Physical materiality defines the catalog sheets, proving that structured editorial design extends beyond digital screens. The studio paired matte paper stock with rich black ink, creating a tactile depth that feels premium. Office supplies like black binder clips and metal pins hold the loose sheets together. This choice emphasizes a hands-on, gallery-focused production method. Through these visual and physical choices, the studio created a cohesive identity system that honors contemporary art without overshadowing it. The catalog functions as a physical extension of the exhibition itself.
