Inside Koto’s new type foundry, CcType
Founder and CCO Jowey Roden reveals why the studio has moved into typography with a focus on versatile, high-craft typefaces designed for the realities of contemporary branding
For a global creative studio, launching a type foundry might seem like an obvious next step. But Koto insists CcType came about as a practical solution to a recurring problem: after years of building brand systems for clients, they kept finding that existing typefaces rarely behaved the way modern brands needed them to.
Some excelled in digital products but lacked personality in campaigns. Others looked beautiful in headlines but fell apart when stretched across complex systems spanning apps, websites, motion graphics and global advertising. So, rather than waiting for someone else to step in, Koto decided it was time to act for itself.
Launched earlier this month, CcType is the agency’s first move into typography as a standalone product. But why was this the right time for Koto to become a company that makes creative products as well as creative services?
