Study reveals consumer preferences for AI packaging design

A study of 3,600 international consumers reveals that combining artificial intelligence with human design generates higher appeal, purchase intent, and willingness to pay than using either method in isolation.

London-based T&T Design Group has published research investigating how consumers respond to artificial intelligence within packaging workflows across six product categories. The study surveyed 3,600 verified category buyers split equally across the United States and five European markets: Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands.

Participants evaluated human-designed, purely AI-generated, and hybrid packaging variants across snacks, skincare, functional drinks, vitamins, coffee, and frozen meals. The findings indicate that packaging developed through a hybrid human-AI process consistently outperforms alternative design approaches across every tested consumer measure, including overall appeal, purchase intent, and financial valuation.

In assessments of overall visual appeal scored out of seven, hybrid designs achieved a rating of 5.36, whereas human-only packaging scored 4.85 and pure AI designs ranked lowest at 4.42. This performance pattern recurred in consumer buying behaviour, with hybrid concepts generating the highest purchase intent across all six product sectors.

Financial evaluations also highlighted a distinct gap in commercial value. Consumers demonstrated a willingness to pay a 6.9% premium above standard category pricing for hybrid options.

By comparison, human-designed packaging commanded a premium of 2.4%, while AI-generated packaging suffered an active commercial discount of minus 1.8%, indicating that consumers assigned it below-average worth relative to the wider category. When forced to choose a single preferred option, 42% of respondents selected the hybrid format, followed by 39% for human-only and 17% for AI-only design.

The research identifies specific behavioural attributes influencing these results, noting that pure AI packaging excels at generating immediate novelty and visual standout on the shelf. However, without human intervention and refinement, automated concepts frequently fail to establish trust, with shoppers describing AI-only designs as generic or inauthentic at the moment of purchase.

Conversely, traditionally human-designed packaging reliably communicates clarity, credibility, and brand legibility, though it can struggle to cut through visual noise in highly competitive retail environments. The hybrid model mitigates these individual limitations by combining visual engagement with structural clarity.

Regional variations showed that while North American buyers demonstrated a higher tolerance for bold AI-only design features, European consumers prioritised the trust cues inherent in human work, though the hybrid methodology secured the top ranking in both geographic territories.

The report suggests that automated tools yield the strongest commercial results when integrated throughout the entire development lifecycle rather than deployed as isolated solutions. T&T Design Group has adjusted its own operating model to employ AI at the initial ideation stage before tasking human designers with brand alignment, execution, and validation.

Commenting on the findings, T&T Design Group chief executive officer Dr Steen Tjarks said, “For brand owners, the research makes a straightforward commercial case. Consumers are telling us that this balance matters. They want the speed, innovation and efficiency AI can bring, but they still value the human judgment that creates trust.”
