To open the 20th Vienna Design Week, the Vienna Tourist Board partnered with Austrian creative agency Jung von Matt DONAU to deliver a bespoke digital tool for global creators. Rather than producing standard destination campaigns or passive tourism imagery, the team built The Vienna Template: a comprehensive presentation kit and UI design system published directly on Figma. Developed alongside curators from the MAK, the Museum of Applied Arts in Vienna, the project translates the foundational philosophy of Viennese Modernism into responsive screen components. The system revives the concept of the Gesamtkunstwerk, or total work of art, giving contemporary teams a disciplined framework steeped in authentic design history.

Viennese Modernism Reborn as a Functional UI Design System

Every layout module in the kit directly connects to an authentic historical artifact from the turn of the twentieth century. The primary image grid derives its proportions from Josef Hoffmann’s geometric liqueur glass designed for J. & L. Lobmeyr. Elsewhere, typographic underlines replicate the textural brushwork of Dagobert Peche’s Kardinal textile swatches. The UI design balances rigorous monospaced coordinates with expressive serif headlines, echoing the radical editorial structures championed by the Wiener Werkstätte. Sharp checkerboard dividers and asymmetric white space establish tension across thirty-three unique slide configurations, keeping pitch presentations grounded in deliberate architectural craft.

The color tokens draw strictly from archival sources rather than generic tech palettes. Jung von Matt DONAU sampled Otto Wagner Green (RAL 6011) from Vienna's historic Stadtbahn stations, complemented by Klimt Gold and a rich ceramic blue extracted from Vally Wieselthier’s furniture sketches. Crucially, the UI design highlights female pioneers of Viennese Modernism, dedicating bespoke case studies to haute couture reformer Emilie Flöge alongside Koloman Moser. By converting museum archives into a practical presentation theme, the studio proves how historic craftsmanship directly enriches modern UI design workflows.
