Overplay card game
Overplay is a card game focused on mixed-media cinema, exploring the history and visual language where live-action footage and real-world backgrounds coexist on screen with hand-drawn animation or CGI elements. Developed during the Digital Aesthetics course taught by Maria Grazia Mattei within the Master’s degree in Communication Design at Politecnico di Milano, the game offers an interactive and engaging way to discover this film technique.
The project relies on a physical layering mechanism: players overlay translucent cards onto background cards to complete iconic scenes from famous mixed-media movies.
The set features a custom tuck box and a folded brochure that outlines the game rules alongside a historical timeline describing key pioneering films and the technical evolution of live-action animation.
The visual identity makes use of Baustraße by Fantasia Type and Halyard by Darden Studio.
