Tochki kasaniya / Common Ground

Точки касания / Common Ground is a bilingual magazine made as student project at TH Nürnberg. The editorial project explores migration and inclusivity in Germany, shifting the narrative from abstract statistics to deeply personal human experiences.

The typographic concept relies on extreme contrast to navigate the reader through complex emotional and statistical data. We utilized hyper-scaled, bold typography for the headlines to create a raw, loud, and uncompromising visual voice. This maximalist approach contrasts sharply with the tightly woven body text, which handles the bilingual content (Russian and German).

This maximalist combination creates a loud and uncompromising visual voice. Designing for two languages required a rigorous grid where these typefaces work together to ensure both languages hold equal visual weight, physicalizing the concept of inclusivity on the page.

The physical production of the magazine embraces an experimental, tactile printcraft aesthetic. To visually and physically separate our own personal narratives from the main interviews, we utilized Risograph printing or colored paper. Bound together with exposed thread stitching, the raw physicality of the magazine perfectly matches the honest, unfiltered nature of the stories and the “sweet trash” (cherished belongings) the migrants brought with them.
