Film and Music Awards Canton of Bern

Each year, the Canton of Bern honours outstanding work in music, film and animation with a series of awards. Alongside the recognition itself, the prizes come with substantial financial support, giving the recipients valuable room to continue and develop their artistic practice. The awards are presented at a public ceremony accompanied by performances and screenings.

For the 2025 edition, held at Theater Nebia in Biel/Bienne, the posters and flyers were designed on behalf of the Education and Culture Directorate of the Canton of Bern.

A defining aspect of the project is the canton’s bilingual identity. Every piece of information has to appear in both German and French – a requirement that became the central idea of the design rather than simply a practical constraint.

The composition is built around 180-degree rotational symmetry. Both the poster and the two sides of the flyer can be turned to bring either language into the reading position. German and French therefore occupy the same space and follow the same visual logic: neither is treated as the primary language, with the other added as a translation. Instead, the two coexist on equal terms, making bilingualism an integral part of the object itself.
