Literally translating to platform cedar, daisugi is a 14th- or 15th-century technique that offers an efficient, sustainable, and visually stunning approach to forestry. The method originated in Kyoto and involves pruning the branches of Kitayama cedar so that the remaining shoots grow straight…
Although devotees of the Olympic games will have to wait until 2021 for the next round of competitions, Donato Sansone channels the same excitement, energy, and displays of strength into an extravagant new mashup. A second iteration of his previous video by the same name, Sansone’s latest motion…
The design team at Nendo knew they’d need a way to connect the three generations—and eight cats—living inside a newly constructed home in the Shinjuku area of Tokyo, so they created an enormous staircase. Spanning from the outdoor garden to the third floor, the steel-and-concrete structure isn’t…

In late 2017 I started learning how to make CGI hair in Blender. I’d watched some videos from Pixar showing how their fur and hair technology had improved over the years, and it seemed like a fun area to explore myself. The hair I knew best belonged to Sam, and I wondered if I could reproduce his…
I have quite a lot of scrap wood in my workshop. I usually get it from cabinet shops that are having a clear out, or from sidewalks where people have dumped it. It mostly just sits in the corner taking up space, but occasionally I find a use for it. In 2015 I tried making some dishes out of the…
